QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Finding the best location to send a message?

The ideal environment or location to send a message from your SPOT device would be a horizon to horizon view of the open sky. There are two satellite constellations that require a line of site to your device to acquire your GPS location and transmit messages. We understand that this type of location cannot always be attained, so here are a few tips in finding a good location to send your message. Ensure that you are not too close to any tall buildings or structures that may block the view of the open sky. If you are in a heavily forested area, attempt to find a clearing If you are in a valley, attempt to elevate as much as possible ...

How can I determine if the SPOT device transmissions affect the aircraft’s navigation electronics?

Turn on the SPOT device and place it in Tracking mode. If the aircraft navigation system starts to have momentary interference issues at the same intervals that the SPOT device is transmitting Tracking messages, then the SPOT device must be moved or turned off to resolve the interference. ...

How can the SPOT interference be prevented in aircraft?

In many cases, keeping the SPOT device at least 12-18 inches away from any navigation equipment or GPS antennas will resolve the problem. This can be difficult in smaller planes as many pilots want to place the SPOT device on the glare shield. If interference is observed, move the SPOT device to another location and check again for interference. Continue testing until the problem is resolved. Please note that in some cases, the interference problem will not be able to be resolved unless the SPOT product is turned off....

How do I share my tracking with other people?

To share tracking in near real-time, we recommend creating a share page from within your SPOT account and sending the link to your contacts. If you prefer to share your location information after you finish your trip, creating a SPOT Adventure will allow you to import your location and messaging activity. Creating a share page is an excellent way to share your messaging and tracking activity with family, friends, and colleagues. Please note that your share page will only display SPOT messaging and tracking information moving forward from the time of its creation. To create a share page, please follow the steps below: From your SPOT Account, click on the Share tab. Click on Create a Share Page. Enter your Share Page Name. Check the Device to Share with the SPOT you want to share data from. Check the type of messages you would like to share. Select whether you would like to share the details of your messages in the share page or not. (do you want an info balloon to open when a point is selected on the share page) Select whether you want your share page to be public or private. You may have a public share page, which will allow anyone who has the link access to your SPOT activity. Or, you may device to have a private share page, which requires a password to access. You may click Create to simply create your share page or you may choose to send your share page link to your family, friends, and/or colleagues by using the notify option. If you would like to send your share page link to your family, friends, and/or colleagues, select the checkbox at the bottom of the page and the web page will expand to display an email form. You may opt to send a copy of this email to yourself. In the To: field, you may enter up to 50 email addresses.
