The Solutions that Stick


Adapting to organizational safety requirements starts and stops with adoption. Whether it’s attire, sensors, tracking, communication or PPE of some other nature, the proper use and long-term adoption are key to the success of the program. These 4 steps will give those responsible for building safety and those accountable for enforcing the safety the tools, support, and partnership to make this safety solution stick.

As the Central U.S. Regional Sales Manager for Globalstar, I recognize biased and I have an uphill battle to gain my reader's attention and trust, but bear with me for a minute.

Every option an organization has in terms of handling safety starts and stops with adoption. Whether it’s attire, sensors, tracking, communication or PPE of some other nature, the proper use and long-term adoption are key to the success of the program.

Now, I have may have some readers nodding their heads or others thinking, “Tell me something I don’t know.” Okay, fair enough, but riddle me this.  Where does this “adoption” process truly start? Who is responsible for holding people accountable for the safety integrated culture?

Many times, the answer to these questions are NOT the people who are responsible for creating safety systems or programs, but more often, the operational team leads and supervisors who are tasked with implementing, training, and enforcing these new devices or practices.

The operational team leads and supervisors are the first and last line of defense in maintaining a safety-minded culture.  They usually have little to no support from the vendor sales teams, little to no input throughout the purchase process and struggle to incorporate the passion and fidelity to the safety program. All three of these items signal a failure to launch and failure to gain long term consistency.

So even if it’s tough to answer my questions I hope we can all agree that there are many levels and team members required for a successful deployment and adoption of a safety solution. Now companies will vary in size, scope, and requirements, but we know there is a balance of carrot and stick for the end-users in the field. From write-ups to safety meetings, or even on the job inspections, companies spend time, and time is money, to enforce a costly safety solution. This cost affects each company no matter the size and injuries or death, due to a lack of safety, can dismantle any reputation built over time.

Now here is where I get to talk about what we here at Globalstar do and how it supports both the carrot and stick, deployment, support and positively impacting those invisible dollars just mentioned. Our safety solution is built to stick. SPOT products roll-out fast, and tools that will manage the long-term adoption by bringing visibility through every phase of the company.

In order to demonstrate, let’s imagine Acme Midstream services has bought into our solution.
  1. The Globalstar team will have units shipped where they are needed, easing the burden of logistics.
  2. Then we will set calls with each ship site supervisor to educate and walk them through the device set-up.
    1. This entails defining each customized message that fits each group colloquially. This is a great buy-in and ownership piece as each group has a say in the micro-culture and communication.
  3. Now with the devices ready and the front-line supervisors trained on how to use the devices, we roll out and then dig in on SPOT My Globalstar, Globalstar’s back office solution providing a centralized location to view and manage personnel and assets.
    1. This meeting can be broken up into smaller one on ones, or in large groups.
    2. The Globalstar team will work inside of Acme Midstream’s live portal as the training ground. So, everything we do sticks and eases some of the time constraints on the first line enforcers.
    3. During this call, we get to set up Geofences that will drive our alerts, and the alerts are built for reporting lack of activity, dwell/potential man down and other safety action items.
  4. Once the hardware roll-out, activation, and SPOT My Globalstar onboarding is complete, now we want to visit with the teams and HSE personnel to continue to fine-tune the solution, gain crucial feedback and build out the use case.
