MCM-8R  Field Demo Unit* The Globalstar Multi-Channel Modem (MCM-8R) is a single-antenna terminal capable of offering up to 256 kbps (56 kbps effective data rate) data over the Globalstar network, when used in conjunction with data compression software. The Globalstar MCM-8R, which is composed of a Stallion e-pipe 2181 bonding router and eight QUALCOMM GSP-1620 satellite data modems, may be used as a stand-alone system to provide remote clients' terminals with up to eight satellite data modem connections to dial out to the public Internet, or into the client's own private servers. Alternatively, the MCM-8R may be used in conjunction with a Stallion e-pipe 2202 to provide the capability to access both the public Internet and also the user's private TCP/IP data network via a VPN tunnel through the public Internet. In the VPN tunnel configuration, the gross bandwidth of the VPN tunnel is the aggregate of the individual bandwidths of the satellite data modem connections used to dial out. The satellite data modems are capable of operating either in packet data mode or asynchronous data mode. In either mode, each satellite data modem is capable of approximately 7 kbps data transmission rate in both directions (to and from the Internet gateways). Packet data mode provides connectivity directly to the Internet. Asynchronous data mode provides data service over PSTN connections, generally via an Internet service provider (ISP). The number of satellite data modems that are used to provide bandwidth is dynamically managed by the Globalstar MCM-8R in order to provide remote clients with the required bandwidth, using the optimum number of Globalstar channels. The Multi-Channel Modem is an ideal solution for marine, aviation (FAA type certification required) and government related tasks that need an instant line of communication to receive and distribute data in a timely and cost-efficient manner. The single, slim line antenna takes up little room on deck and has been FAA certified for use on airplanes. It provides an easy-to-install solution for individuals and businesses that require medium rate data speeds, in areas where little or no communications exist.
